The Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, Professor Andy Egwunyenga, has initiated an investigation into the violence that broke out during the social activities of the Students’ Union Week. This directive was announced in an official statement released by the university.

According to reports, the violence erupted on Wednesday due to a conflict involving the Students’ Union president, the president of a department, and several event attendees. The incident took place during a welcome party organized by a department for all 100-level students.

The discord began when the Students’ Union president arrived at the event and demanded its closure, insisting that the Students’ Union Week activities should take precedence. This demand led to a heated disagreement that escalated into a physical altercation. As a result, one of the guests sustained injuries during the brawl.

Reacting to the incident, Vice Chancellor Egwunyenga expressed deep concern and disapproval over the reported violence and disorderly conduct among students and Students’ Union officials. He specified that the altercations occurred at the Pre-Degree Hall and other university locations between 6:39 pm and 7:30 pm on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

“The university administration received with sadness and strong disapproval the report of violence and disorderly conduct involving some students and Students’ Union officials,” stated Professor Egwunyenga. “After a review of the report, a committee has been constituted to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the unfortunate incident. All those found culpable after due investigation shall be dealt with according to extant university regulations.”

The investigation aims to uncover the underlying causes of the conflict and ensure accountability for those responsible. The university administration is committed to maintaining a safe and orderly environment on campus, and any breaches of conduct will be addressed in line with university policies to deter further occurrence.
