Barack and Michelle Obama have approved Vice-President Kamala Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination, ending speculation about their support.

In a joint statement, the former President and First Lady praised Harris’s vision, character, and strength, qualities they believe are essential at this crucial time.

Harris had conversations with over 100 prominent Democrats, including Obama, after President Joe Biden withdrew from his re-election bid, endorsing Kamala Harris as his successor. While Obama commended Biden’s decision to step aside, he initially held back from endorsing Harris.

Having secured a majority of Democratic delegates, Harris is now on track to become the official nominee at the party convention in August.

The Obamas expressed their excitement and pledged to do everything possible to help her win. “We agree with President Biden,” they said, “choosing Kamala was one of his best decisions. Her impressive record as California’s Attorney General, a US Senator, and Vice-President speaks for itself.”

They stated that beyond her resume, Harris possesses the vision and strength needed now. “Kamala Harris has what it takes to win this election and deliver for the American people. At a time when the stakes have never been higher, she gives us all reason to hope.”

The statement was accompanied by a video of Harris receiving a supportive phone call from the Obamas. “Oh my goodness,” Harris exclaimed. “Michelle, Barack, this means so much to me.”

Since Biden’s withdrawal, Harris has been actively campaigning across the US. On Thursday, she addressed the American Federation of Teachers union in Houston, in an event that felt like a campaign rally.

She criticized “extremist” Republicans and their “failed” policies, advocating for banning assault weapons instead of books.

Meanwhile, Republican nominee Donald Trump attacked Harris on social media, calling her a “radical left Marxist.” He also refused to commit to a debate with her until she is officially confirmed as the nominee, suggesting that Democrats might still be looking for a different candidate.

Harris has engaged in “frank and constructive” discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stressing the need to end the Israel-Gaza conflict and stating her concerns about casualties in Gaza.

She also stressed the importance of working towards a two-state solution. Netanyahu has also met with Biden and is scheduled to meet with Trump as well.
