The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) has called on the Federal Government to urgently address the “alarming” increase in killings, kidnappings, and banditry across the country.

In a statement released on Tuesday, NIREC, led by the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Daniel Okoh, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, expressed deep concern over the rising insecurity in Nigeria.

“The current rise in banditry, abductions, and killings is beyond alarming, and these heinous acts must be brought to an end,” stated NIREC Secretary Cornelius Omonokhua.

The council cited recent incidents, including the murder of thirteen farmers in Shiroro, Niger State, the abduction of 150 people in Gobir, Sokoto State, and other violent attacks within just one week, as deeply troubling.

NIREC urged the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to forestall these threats, and let the citizens of Nigeria live their lives and travel without fear.

The council also extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and prayed for the safe return of those still held captive.
