President Joe Biden has referred to the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah as a “measure of justice” for the victims of the militant group’s violent actions over the past four decades.
In a statement, Biden emphasized that Nasrallah and Hezbollah were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans and thousands of civilians across Israel, Lebanon, and beyond.
The Hezbollah leader was killed in an Israeli airstrike, which Biden linked to the broader regional conflict, sparked by Hamas’s assault on October 7, 2023.
Nasrallah had made the critical decision to ally with Hamas by opening a “northern front” against Israel, escalating tensions in the region.
Biden reiterated the United States’ strong support for Israel’s right to defend itself against Hezbollah, Hamas, and other Iran-backed groups, stating that the U.S. military posture in the Middle East has been reinforced to deter further aggression and prevent a larger regional war.
He also stressed that the ultimate goal is to reduce violence and seek diplomatic solutions to conflicts in both Gaza and Lebanon.
Biden highlighted ongoing efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza and secure the release of hostages, while negotiations in Lebanon focus on ensuring the safe return of civilians to their homes.
His statement concluded with a call for these agreements to be finalized and for stability to be restored in the Middle East.
