The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has issued a critical warning about heavy rainfall and rising temperatures across the country in 2025.
The agency predicts flash floods in coastal cities during May and June, as well as irregular rainfall patterns in various states.
Delayed and Early Rainfall Patterns
According to Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, rainfall will begin later than usual in parts of Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Kwara, and Plateau. However, states like Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Anambra will experience early rainfall onset.
Unusual End to the Rainy Season
The rainy season is expected to end earlier than normal in Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, FCT, Ekiti, and Ondo. Meanwhile, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, Lagos, Kwara, Taraba, Oyo, Ogun, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Anambra, and Enugu may experience a delayed end to rainfall.
Rising Temperatures Across Nigeria
NiMET also forecasts above-average temperatures nationwide, with January, February, March, and May being hotter than usual. Northern states will experience extreme heat, while April is expected to be slightly cooler than normal.
What This Means for Nigerians
- Flood Risk – Coastal cities should prepare for in May and June.
- Agriculture Concerns – Farmers should plan their planting seasons carefully due to unpredictable rainfall patterns.
- Heatwaves – Rising temperatures may lead to health risks, particularly in the northern states.
Government Advice
Minister Keyamo urged Nigerians, especially farmers and businesses dependent on rainfall, to stay informed by consulting NiMET’s Seasonal Climate Prediction for precise weather updates.
