Pope Francis has passed away at the age of 88. The Holy Father died peacefully on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at 7:35 a.m. in his residence at Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City.

The news of his death was formally announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, who addressed the faithful at 9:45 a.m., saying:

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”

Final Health Struggles Before His Death

Pope Francis had been battling chronic respiratory illness for years. He was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on February 14, 2025, after suffering from bronchitis. Doctors later diagnosed him with bilateral pneumonia on February 18.

After spending 38 days in hospital, he returned to his Vatican residence in March to recover. Despite medical efforts, his condition deteriorated in the weeks leading to his death.

This was not the Pope’s first health scare. In 1957, while in his early 20s in Argentina, Jorge Mario Bergoglio underwent lung surgery due to a severe infection. In recent years, Pope Francis experienced frequent respiratory setbacks, including the cancellation of his November 2023 visit to the UAE due to influenza and lung inflammation.

Preparations for His Final Journey

In April 2024, Pope Francis personally approved a revised version of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis – the liturgical book that governs the funeral rites of Popes. The second edition introduces new elements that reflect his humble vision of Church service.

According to Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, the Pope had requested a simplified funeral that reflects the hope of the Resurrection rather than earthly grandeur.

“The renewed rite seeks to emphasise even more that the funeral of the Roman Pontiff is that of a pastor and disciple of Christ and not of a powerful person of this world,” said Archbishop Ravelli.

Per the updated protocol, the confirmation of death takes place in the chapel, and the Pope’s body is placed immediately into the coffin to honour the dignity of his person.
