Russia has launched its biggest aerial assault since the start of the Ukraine war, striking Kyiv’s government building for the first time. Overnight, Moscow deployed more than 800 drones, four ballistic missiles, and nine cruise missiles in an unprecedented wave of attacks. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, while many were intercepted by defences, 54 drones and nine missiles still hit targets nationwide. The capital endured 11 hours of sirens, with residential buildings heavily damaged and lives lost, including that of an infant. Officials confirmed that four people were killed across Ukraine and more than a dozen wounded, making it one of the deadliest strikes in recent months.
The assault also damaged the roof and upper floors of the prime minister’s office building in Kyiv, alongside other ministries within the government quarter. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko described it as a “massive attack,” stressing that while buildings can be rebuilt, the innocent lives lost are irreplaceable. Several districts in Kyiv, including Sviatoshynskyi, suffered devastating damage, with apartment blocks reduced to rubble and fires breaking out across multiple sites. Emergency workers battled through debris, recovering the body of a child less than a year old, while also rescuing dozens from burning buildings. Residents described the night as the most terrifying yet, with explosions shaking homes and instilling fear and anger.

The timing of the attack is significant, coming just as Ukraine’s Western allies attempt to revive peace talks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the strikes “vile crimes” that prolong the war, urging global leaders to show political will to stop the Kremlin. Meanwhile, Russia has warned that Western troops on Ukrainian soil would be considered legitimate targets. Kyiv responded by striking energy facilities inside Russia’s Bryansk region and Krasnodar Territory. With both sides escalating, the conflict shows no sign of slowing, leaving civilians bearing the brunt of the devastation.
