In Oviri-Ogor Community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, a gang of suspected kidnappers engaged the Police in a fierce gun battle, leaving one of the kidnappers dead.

According to an official statement from the Delta State Police Command, the suspect sustained serious gunshot injuries during the confrontation and was rushed to a hospital. Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, the suspect succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

The operation, led by ASP Julius Robinson, was able to arrest three members of the kidnapping gang.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Ismaila Umaru, 28 years old, Chede Mohammed, 18 years old, and Mohammadu Sani, 26 years old.

Delta State Police PRO, SP Bright Edafe, provided further details on the incident as follows:

“He stated that the police acted on credible intelligence gathered over time, which pointed to a kidnapping incident involving a male victim in the Edjakota area of Ughelli South LGA. The victim, whose name has been withheld for security reasons, was abducted from his residence, prompting a swift response from the police.

The police successfully apprehended Ismaila Umaru in Oghara town, Delta State on the July 1, 2024.

Umaru, is from Kekura Village in Awe LGA of Nasarawa State, and had been residing in Oghara. His arrest led to valuable information that guided the police to two other gang members.

On July 4, 2024, the police arrested Chede, a native of Nasarawa State living in Agwara, Ughelli South LGA, and Mohammadu Sani, from Banbiru area of Abuja, residing in Upper Agbarho, Ughelli North.

Through the suspects’ confessions the Police was able to locate their hideout. On July 5, 2024, at approximately 5:30 AM, police operatives stormed a bush area in Oviri-Ogor.

During this operation, the Police encountered armed resistance from other members of the gang. One of the suspects hiding in the bush sustained severe gunshot injuries during the exchange of fire and was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The police recovered an AK-49 rifle and other items from the hideout.”

SP Bright Edafe stated that investigations are ongoing, and the police are determined to arrest the remaining members of the gang.
