The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down over 240 illegal factories operating in the infamous Cemetery Market, Aba, Abia State. The raid, described as the agency’s most decisive action yet, was carried out under an operation dubbed Operation Clean Up Aba.
The operation, led by NAFDAC Director General Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, uncovered fake and substandard food and beverages worth over ₦5 billion.
Professor Adeyeye stated that the factories, often hidden in makeshift structures, were producing counterfeit versions of popular brands like Hennessy, Seaman Schnapps, Coca-Cola, Sprite, Peak Milk, and Hollandia Yoghurt.

“These criminal elements use harmful chemicals, contaminated water, saccharin, colouring agents, and recycled bottles to produce these fake products under shockingly unhygienic conditions,” Adeyeye explained. “The adulteration of alcoholic beverages, for instance, involves cheaper sugars and starches instead of fruits or grapes, making the products highly dangerous for human consumption.”
This is the second time in two years that NAFDAC has raided the Cemetery Market, which has gained notoriety as a hub for counterfeit alcoholic drinks, carbonated beverages, and food products.
According to Adeyeye, this latest raid represents a major step in safeguarding public health and curbing the circulation of fake products in Nigeria.
During the raid, over 1,500 cartons of counterfeit goods were destroyed on-site. Additionally, three warehouses were discovered stockpiling expired Hollandia Yoghurt, which was allegedly being prepared for revalidation.
NAFDAC officials emphasised that the counterfeiters were using expired or substandard materials to increase profits at the expense of consumer safety.
Professor Adeyeye commended the support of the Abia State Government, led by Governor Alex Otti, and other local authorities, including the Mayor of Aba South and the interim market management committee, for their crucial role in the success of the operation.
“The unwavering support of Governor Alex Otti and the local government was instrumental in ensuring the success of Operation Clean Up Aba,” Adeyeye said. She further urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious products or activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.
Cemetery Market has been a breeding ground for counterfeit production for years, posing threat to the health and safety of Nigerians.
“This raid is not just about shutting down factories but about sending a clear message that the health of Nigerians cannot be compromised,” Adeyeye stated.
As NAFDAC continues its efforts to rid markets of fake and substandard products, the agency calls on citizens to play their part in the fight against counterfeit goods by staying informed, checking product authenticity, and reporting suspicious activities.
