In a significant decision, the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal, headed by Justice Thomas Okosu, has fined Multichoice Nigeria N150 million.
In addition, the Tribunal ordered Multichoice to provide one month of free subscriptions on its DStv and GOtv platforms for all its customers.
This ruling came after a lawsuit filed by lawyer Festus Onifade, who challenged Multichoice’s plan to raise subscription rates starting May 1, 2024. Initially, the tribunal had issued an order to halt the price hike while the case was being reviewed.
Multichoice contested the tribunal’s jurisdiction, which led to extended legal proceedings. Despite Multichoice’s objections, the tribunal affirmed its authority and issued its ruling on Friday. This decision offers temporary relief to DStv and GOtv subscribers in Nigeria, ensuring they are not immediately affected by the proposed rate increase.
The tribunal’s ruling not only penalizes Multichoice but also aims to protect consumers by providing them with a free 30-day subscription period. This decision underscores the tribunal’s commitment to enforcing fair competition and consumer protection standards in Nigeria.
