The Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) in Oghara, Ethiope West, has achieved an important milestone by securing National and West African accreditation for its surgery program and several other courses.

This accomplishment was confirmed by Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, during a media briefing following a meeting with Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, top hospital officials, and members of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA).

Dr. Onojaeme stated that this recognition reflects DELSUTH’s commitment to excellence in healthcare.

He noted that efforts are currently underway to secure accreditation for additional departments, including Internal Medicine, Radiology, and Community Medicine, as the hospital continues to expand its medical offerings.

During the meeting, Dr. Onojaeme also praised Governor Oborevwori for his ongoing support of the hospital.

In the past month, the Governor approved the purchase of a CT scan for DELSUTH and has pledged to provide additional critical equipment, such as an MRI machine and eco-cardiography tools, to enhance the hospital’s capacity. These improvements are expected to greatly benefit both staff and patients.

“Previously, DELSUTH’s accreditation relied heavily on state government support, but with an increase in internally generated revenue, the hospital is becoming more self-sustaining,” Dr. Onojaeme explained. “In just two weeks, the hospital gained national and West African accreditation for its Surgery Department, and other departments are soon to follow.”

Leaders of the hospital, including Acting Chief Medical Director Dr. Awunor Nyemike and MDCAN Chairman Prof. Jude Uchendu, along with State NMA Chairman Dr. Israel Adaigho, expressed their gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for his dedication to improving healthcare in the state.
