
The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results for school-based candidates.
NECO Registrar, Professor Dantani Wushishi, made the announcement on Thursday at the examination body’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State.
A total of 1,376,423 candidates registered for the exam, with 1,367,736 students actually sitting for it.
This group included 706,950 males and 669,473 females. In comparison, the 2023 exams saw 1.2 million candidates register.
According to NECO, 828,284 candidates, representing 60.55% of those who took the exam, passed with at least five credits, including English and Mathematics.
These five credits are essential for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions. This pass rate is similar to previous years, with 61.60% in 2023 and 60% in 2022.
Additionally, 83.90% of candidates earned credits in at least five subjects, regardless of English and Mathematics, slightly lower than last year’s 84.68%.
NECO reported that 2,267 candidates with special needs sat for the exams. These included 1,104 with hearing impairments, 348 with visual impairments, 342 with albinism, 237 with autism, and 236 with low vision.
The number of candidates involved in malpractice this year was 8,437, continuing a downward trend from previous years. In 2023, 12,030 candidates were involved in malpractice, while in 2022, the figure stood at 13,595.
