Parts of Russia’s Belgorod region are being evacuated following the entry of Ukrainian forces into the region, with similar evacuations already underway in the neighboring Kursk region, which saw an invasion by Ukrainian troops on Tuesday.
Ukrainian media has circulated a video purportedly showing Kyiv’s forces in Belgorod and Kursk regions, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested the incursions are a “fair” response to nearly 2,000 cross-border strikes launched by Russia from Kursk into Ukraine’s Sumy region over the summer.
Reports indicate that up to 6,000 Ukrainian troops have crossed into Russian territory, with the Institute for the Study of War noting that Ukrainian forces are currently holding positions in the Sudzha area of Kursk.
