As the festive season approaches, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public advisory to Nigerians, urging them to prioritize health and safety in their food and drink choices.
In a statement delivered at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja, NAFDAC Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the importance of avoiding uncertified alcoholic beverages and substandard juices during the Yuletide.
The holiday season is a time of celebration and indulgence, often marked by feasting and revelry. However, Mrs. Adeyeye cautioned Nigerians to remain mindful of the potential health risks posed by unregulated beverages. “I want to admonish Nigerians, especially during this Yuletide, to avoid alcohol and juices not certified by NAFDAC,” she stated. She further stressed that substandard products often flood the market during this period, posing significant health hazards to consumers.
Substandard juices, in particular, can contain harmful additives, unsafe levels of preservatives, or even toxic substances that can lead to severe health complications. Similarly, unregulated alcoholic beverages may contain methanol or other toxic impurities, which have been linked to cases of poisoning and, in extreme instances, fatalities.
The NAFDAC boss also encouraged Nigerians to embrace healthier alternatives such as fresh fruits and vegetables. According to Mrs. Adeyeye, nutrient-rich foods act as natural medicines, strengthening the body’s immune system and preventing diseases. She highlighted the benefits of consuming foods packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber, which contribute to overall well-being and vitality.
In her words, “Fruits and vegetables are not just foods; they are medicines in many cases.” By opting for these natural options, Nigerians can ensure they are nourishing their bodies while avoiding the risks associated with processed and uncertified consumables.
The Yuletide season often sees an increase in the availability of substandard and expired products as unscrupulous vendors attempt to capitalize on the surge in demand.
According to NAFDAC, these products are frequently sold at lower prices to attract unsuspecting consumers. However, the hidden costs to health can be devastating. This emphasizes the importance of purchasing only certified products from reputable outlets.
NAFDAC has consistently worked to crack down on counterfeit and substandard products through regulatory measures and market monitoring. However, the responsibility also falls on consumers to stay vigilant and make informed choices.
To ensure a safe and healthy festive season, NAFDAC advises the public to follow these guidelines:
- Check for NAFDAC Certification: Always inspect the packaging for a NAFDAC registration number before purchasing beverages or food items.
- Purchase from Trusted Vendors: Avoid roadside or unverified sellers, particularly for products like juices and alcohol.
- Read Labels: Pay attention to expiration dates and ingredient lists to ensure products meet quality standards.
- Embrace Fresh Options: Choose fresh fruits, vegetables, and natural drinks over processed or uncertified alternatives.
- Limit Alcohol Intake: Even certified alcoholic beverages should be consumed in moderation to prevent health risks.
Mrs. Adeyeye reaffirmed NAFDAC’s dedication to safeguarding public health through stringent regulations and active monitoring.
The agency has intensified efforts to identify and remove substandard products from the market while educating the public about the dangers they pose.
She stated, “Our commitment is to ensure a healthy Nigeria by maintaining strict oversight and raising awareness about safe consumption practices.” This includes collaboration with stakeholders, enforcement actions against violators, and community outreach initiatives.
Products certified by NAFDAC undergo rigorous testing to ensure they meet safety and quality standards. Certification not only guarantees that the product is free from harmful contaminants but also verifies that it has been properly stored and transported. In contrast, uncertified products may harbour bacteria, mold, or toxic chemicals, all of which can lead to serious health issues.
While regulatory bodies like NAFDAC play a crucial role in ensuring food safety, consumers also have a part to play. Awareness and education are key to making informed decisions.
Nigerians are urged to prioritize quality over cost and to report any suspicious products to the authorities.
In addition, communities can take proactive steps by spreading the message about safe consumption practices and advocating for adherence to regulatory guidelines. By working together, consumers and regulatory agencies can create a safer marketplace for all.
The Yuletide season is a time for joy and togetherness. As Mrs. Adeyeye aptly put it, “Your health is your wealth. Celebrate wisely and prioritize what truly matters.”
