As we usher in 2025, WhatsApp has announced significant changes that will impact users with older smartphones.
Starting January 1, 2025, the messaging app will cease to function on certain Android devices, followed by similar measures for iPhones later in the year.
Android Devices Affected
From January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer support Android devices running versions earlier than Android 5.0 (Lollipop).
This change affects several models that cannot be updated to newer operating systems. Notable devices include:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E (2014)
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
Users with these devices are advised to back up their chats and consider upgrading to newer models to maintain access to WhatsApp.
iPhones to Lose Support
For iPhone users, WhatsApp will require iOS 15.1 or later starting May 5, 2025. Devices unable to upgrade beyond iOS 12.5.7, such as the iPhone 5s, … , and iPhone 6 Plus, will be affected.
These models, among the best-selling smartphones with over 220 million units sold since 2013, will no longer support WhatsApp after the specified date.
Reasons Behind the Decision
Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, cites the need to incorporate advanced features and enhanced security measures that require more recent hardware capabilities. Older devices lack the technical specifications to support these updates, prompting the discontinuation of support.
Recommendations for Users
Users with affected devices should:
- Back Up Chats: Save conversations and media to avoid data loss.
- Upgrade Devices: Consider moving to newer smartphones that meet WhatsApp’s current system requirements.
By taking these steps, users can ensure uninterrupted access to WhatsApp’s services and benefit from upcoming features and security enhancements.
