In a major relief for festive travellers, the Federal Ministry of Transportation has launched the 2024 Yuletide Road Transportation Palliative, offering a 50% discount on fares across the country.

The scheme, designed to ease travel during the busy holiday season, will commence on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, and run until Sunday, January 5, 2025.

Announcing the initiative on Monday, Olujimi Oyetomi, Director of Press and Public Relations for the ministry, highlighted its focus on making transportation affordable and accessible for Nigerians heading to their hometowns for the festive season.

Over 700 Buses to Serve 144 Routes

Minister of Transportation Ahmed Alkali officially launched the scheme, tasking major transportation unions, including the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), God is Good Motors (GIGM), and the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria (ALBON), with ensuring smooth operations.

With over 700 buses deployed to 144 routes, the programme is expected to transport an estimated 271,104 passengers nationwide. All state capitals are included, except Anambra, which will use Onitsha as its terminal.

Key Loading Points and Timings

Abuja: Travellers in Abuja can board palliative buses at Eagle Square starting at 6:00 a.m. daily.

Lagos: In Lagos, northern-bound passengers will depart from Oshodi Terminal 3, and southern-bound travellers will use Oshodi Terminal 2.

Luxury buses are also scheduled to depart from Oshodi between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. daily for longer journeys.

Minister Addresses Initial Delays

Acknowledging early logistical hiccups, Minister Alkali assured Nigerians that all challenges have been resolved. He urged passengers to avoid unnecessary rushing at terminals, emphasising that the limited buses would be efficiently managed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

A Thoughtful Yuletide Gift

The 2024 Yuletide Palliative is expected to provide much-needed respite to Nigerians grappling with high transportation costs, facilitating a more joyful festive season for thousands.

Those who want to utilise this opportunity are encouraged to plan their journeys early to take full advantage of this government-backed initiative.
