As Christians across the globe celebrate Easter, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his warm greetings to the faithful in Nigeria and around the world, calling for unity, sacrifice, and renewed hope in these trying times.
In a statement released on Friday, 18 April 2025, the President reflected on the message of Easter—sacrifice, redemption, love, and hope—emphasising their importance in the nation’s current climate. He reassured Nigerians that his administration remains firmly committed to the “Renewed Hope” agenda aimed at building a fairer, more prosperous country.
Tinubu expressed deep sadness over the recent tragedies and loss of lives in some parts of Nigeria, reiterating his government’s resolve to restore peace and security. According to him, clear directives have already been issued to the Armed Forces and security agencies to stamp out insecurity decisively.
In his Easter message, the President also lauded the courage of Nigeria’s military personnel for their sacrifice in the fight against insecurity. He acknowledged that, despite economic hardships, Nigeria is beginning to see early signs of recovery and growth.

The President’s words were also filled with prayers for the nation’s unity and prosperity. He encouraged Nigerians to stand strong and continue to work together for the good of the country. Drawing spiritual inspiration from the season, Tinubu invoked the blessings of the risen Christ and extended best wishes to Pope Francis, thanking God for the Pontiff’s recovery and leadership.
However, the timing and location of Tinubu’s message have stirred criticism, with many Nigerians questioning his continued stay abroad amid worsening insecurity back home.
Among the most vocal critics is Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, who on 16 April publicly urged the President to suspend his “working visit” to Paris and return home.
Obi decried the spate of killings in Plateau State and across the country, saying the President’s physical absence during such a critical time sends the wrong message to citizens. He called on Tinubu to show leadership by returning to Nigeria and directly addressing the nation’s growing security crisis.
While Tinubu’s message sought to uplift and unite, the calls for his return continue to echo, underscoring the tension between leadership from afar and the urgent need for hands-on governance at home.
