Dr. Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, just 49 days after his impeachment.

His return follows the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who had assumed the speakership after his removal.

On 13 January 2025, Obasa was impeached by a substantial majority of the Assembly members, with 36 out of 40 lawmakers voting for his removal.

The impeachment was predicated on allegations of gross misconduct, financial misappropriation, high-handedness, and abuse of office. Specific accusations included consistent lateness to legislative sessions, lack of regard for fellow members, and actions deemed detrimental to the integrity of the Assembly.

Obasa’s reinstatement on 3 March 2025 was initiated by a nomination from Noheem Adams, representing Eti-Osa I, following Meranda’s resignation. Prior to the plenary session, a conciliatory meeting was held involving key stakeholders, including the state Attorney General, Lawal Pedro, and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This intervention aimed to resolve the leadership crisis that had ensued post-impeachment.

The reinstatement also brought about a reshuffling of key positions within the Assembly:

  • Deputy Speaker: Mojisola Meranda returned to her former role as Deputy Speaker.
  • Majority Leader: Adewale Temitope assumed the position of Majority Leader.
  • Deputy Majority Leader: Richard Kasumu was appointed Deputy Majority Leader.
  • Chief Whip: Mojeed Fatai was named Chief Whip.
  • Deputy Chief Whip: David Setonji returned to his role as Deputy Chief Whip.

Upon his reinstatement, Obasa expressed profound gratitude to his colleagues and party leaders for their intervention during the crisis. He acknowledged their efforts in facilitating his return and emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration within the Assembly to effectively serve the people of Lagos State.
