Nyesom Wike to answer for alleged anti-party actions
Nyesom Wike: Minister of FCT

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has emphasized the importance of providing a comprehensive welfare package for judicial officers, particularly focusing on housing, to safeguard the judiciary from undue influence and manipulation.

Wike made these remarks during the official flag-off ceremony for the construction of 40 judges’ quarters in the Katampe District, Abuja, on Monday.

Wike pointed out that ensuring judges have housing security upon retirement would greatly reduce their vulnerability to manipulation or interference.

He stated, “If we truly want to insulate the judiciary from manipulation and interference, it’s vital to review their conditions of service, particularly their remuneration and housing needs.”

He continued, “Housing is a basic need for every individual, including judicial officers. We often talk about supporting judicial independence, but we must demonstrate this through concrete actions.”

Wike explained that when judges are assured of a house and stable benefits after their tenure, they would be more resolute and fearless in their duties. “With a guaranteed home, judges can stand firm in their judgments. What would they have to fear when they know their salaries, allowances, and tenure are secure?”

The housing project, which was recently approved by the Federal Executive Council, has already received 70% of its funding. Of the 40 units being constructed, 20 are designated for the FCT High Court, 10 for the Federal High Court, and 10 for the Court of Appeal.

The event saw the attendance of notable figures such as Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, among other dignitaries.
