Nigeria’s Super Eagles kicked off their 2025 AFCON qualifiers in style, securing a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday.
The game was packed with excitement as Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen delivered standout performances to lead Nigeria to a flying start.
Fresh off his nomination for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, Lookman was on fire, scoring twice to ignite Nigeria’s charge towards the next AFCON in Morocco.
The Beninese team managed to hold Nigeria at bay for most of the first half with a determined defense, but Lookman broke the deadlock in dramatic fashion during stoppage time, and that was it; the beginning of their fall.
The Atalanta winger cleverly weaved through defenders and slotted a sharp shot to give the Super Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The second half saw Nigeria crank up the pressure, and it wasn’t long before Victor Osimhen made his mark. The newly signed Galatasaray striker, who had been involved in a high-profile transfer saga with Napoli, Chelsea, and Al Ahli, came off the bench in the 78th minute and wasted no time showcasing his skills. He smashed a superb half-volley into the net after a brilliant setup from Wilfred Ndidi, extending Nigeria’s lead to 2-0.
Lookman wasn’t done yet. Just five minutes later, the in-form forward sealed Nigeria’s win with his second goal of the night.
He rose high to meet a pinpoint cross from Moses Simon, heading the ball into the top right corner, well beyond the reach of the Beninese goalkeeper.
Benin Republic had their moments, testing Nigeria’s defense with a few promising attacks, but goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was up to the challenge.
His crucial saves ensured the Super Eagles walked away with a clean sheet.
This resounding win marked a great start for interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, who returned to the helm after a last-minute collapse of negotiations between the Nigeria Football Federation and German coach Bruno Labbadia over tax disputes.
Eguavoen’s team sent a strong message to their AFCON rivals, proving they are ready to compete after avenging their previous 2-1 loss to Benin in a World Cup qualifier.
With the new spirit, the Super Eagles look set to dominate their path to AFCON 2025.
